EXTRA! EXTRAORDINARY LITERACY SUCCESS STORY

Nicole is a 9-year-old student at Nichols Elementary School in Stratford. She started playing violin with INTEMPO when she was just 6 years old and looks up to her older sisters, Jasmine and Kimberly, who play viola and violin respectively. Nicole participated in our literacy intervention program and has made significant progress in her reading abilities and academics. We are proud of her accomplishments! In Fall 2023, Nicole shared with us the exciting news that she had been accepted into REACH Prep, a nonprofit educational organization for high-achieving students. What is REACH Prep? 

It is a special program that helps you get into great schools to enrich education. They test for academic excellence by starting off with 300 fourth graders and narrowing it down to 25 fourth graders.

How did you prepare to apply for REACH Prep? 

My parents discovered the program and told me I should challenge myself.

Did you have to do an interview?

I had to interview one person through Google Meets by myself. They asked me about me, not just what's on paper but who I really am, what’s my family like, and things that I take interest in for extracurriculars like music and my violin.

Where is REACH prep located? Do you have to travel far for this?

They participate in different schools, every Saturday I go to Greenwich and yeah, the car ride is usually an hour or more.

What is your car ride like, when coming to INTEMPO from Stratford every week? What is it about INTEMPO that keeps you and your sisters coming here every week?

We keep coming because we enjoy being here. Just playing, collaborating, and learning about music makes the trip worth it.

When did you realize you were in it to win it?

At first, I didn’t know, but my parents kept me going. On top of being the youngest out of my sisters, there is enough pressure because my sisters are so talented and smart, so I pinch myself for not getting something right that they got on their first try. After that, I know I am able to.

What is your favorite book or topic to read now? 

I like to read historical fiction.

The BEST PART was…

Getting to experience other people’s lenses.

What is a quote you live by?

“Play the violin with love or not at all.”

Is it hard?

It’s just 1+1. I just solve it ‘til I do.

¿Cómo  te preparaste para aplicar a REACH Prep?

Mis padres descubrieron el programa y me dijeron que debía desafiarme a mí misma.

¿Tuviste que hacer una entrevista?

Una mujer me entrevistó a través de Google Meets. Me preguntaron sobre mí, no solo sobre lo que está en papel sino sobre quién soy realmente, cómo es mi familia y las cosas que me interesan en actividades extracurriculares como la música y mi violín.

¿Dónde se encuentra REACH Prep? ¿Tienes que viajar lejos para esto?

Participan en diferentes escuelas, todos los sábados voy a Greenwich y sí, el viaje en carro suele ser de una hora o más.

¿Cómo es tu viaje en carro cuando vienes a INTEMPO desde Stratford todas las semanas? ¿Qué tiene INTEMPO que hace que tú y tus hermanas vengan aquí todas las semanas?

Seguimos viniendo porque disfrutamos estar aquí. Simplemente tocar, colaborar y aprender sobre música hace que el viaje valga la pena.

¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que estabas ahí para ganar?

Al principio no lo sabía, pero mis padres me ayudaron a seguir adelante. Además de ser la más joven de mis hermanas, hay suficiente presión porque mis hermanas son muy talentosas e inteligentes, así que me pellizco por no haber hecho bien algo que ellas hicieron en el primer intento. Después de eso, sé que puedo hacerlo.

¿Cuál es tu libro o tema favorito para leer ahora?

Me gusta leer ficción histórica.

La MEJOR PARTE fue...

Llegar a experimentar los lentes de otras personas en el mundo.

¿Cuál es una cita según la cual vives?

“Toca el violín con amor o no lo toques.”

¿Es difícil?

Es sólo 1+1. Simplemente lo soluciono hasta que terminó, no cuando me canse.
