Interview with Jasmine Cabello<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At just 13 years old, Jasmine began her journey to master the viola and has since become a valuable member of the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles. Her passion for music is matched only by her dedication to academic studies, and her upbringing in the indigenous cultures of Peru and Ecuador has instilled a deep appreciation for her heritage. Jasmine’s parents have been instrumental in her success, driving her and her sisters 25 miles each way from Stratford to INTEMPO in Stamford for continued musical and youth development. Tell me about YOLA. What is it?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0YOLA stands for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles. It is an extremely competitive music program across the entire United States. Ms. Angie [INTEMPO\u2019s Founder and CEO] and Mr. Benn, my viola instructor, encouraged me to audition for the Summer 2022 festival. I got so excited at the chance to travel and play music. I\u2019ve been a part of it now for two summers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was required of you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was super hard\u2013 many hours practicing for a performance of two scales [a well-executed set of music notes] and two excerpts, which is a small passage of a piece, to get into the 10-day Summer program. After that, it\u2019s just a matter of recording and submitting, but it takes more than just pressing submit; it takes patience, determination, cooperation, and persistence. It required me to love what I do, love my instrument<\/em>, use the tools my teachers instilled in me, and ultimately, believe in myself to do my best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 What was your experience like? What was your first time playing with the orchestra like?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After getting the good news that I was accepted to go to Los Angeles, I was really proud of myself. The first time I arrived, I recognized two girls from INTEMPO and was happy to dorm with familiar faces. We grew so close in such a short amount of time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The famous conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, gave an inspiring speech and did the honors of playing with our orchestra. It might sound really cringy, but it was amaaaazing<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em> It\u2019s an inexpressible, strong, intense, and exciting feeling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viola is always in the back of my mind. It was all I could think about afterward. It was powerful to be on the big stage, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Just magical. I love the great feeling of playing with new people. I know I only was with them for 10 days, but I felt I knew them longer. I could practice for hours a day with my<\/em> orchestra, with my section<\/em>, and we would not get tired as opposed to when I\u2019m alone, I get bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kinds of challenges did you face? What did you learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest challenge for me was quieting the voices of insecurity and doubt and knowing that they would wash away once I started playing. I learned so much from my teachers, tips that light a bulb in my head and get me closer to conquering my instrument. For example, for the notes that require fast bow movements, my teacher showed me how to use tools like using and practicing faster fingerings [a technique used in playing musical instruments to indicate which fingers should be used at a given time]. It was easy to learn with all the attention my teachers and peers paid. It was like we were all present. All there. <\/em>In time, in tempo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con tan solo 13 a\u00f1os, Jasmine comenz\u00f3 su camino hacia la maestr\u00eda de la viola y desde entonces se ha convertido en una valiosa miembro de la Orquesta Juvenil de Los \u00c1ngeles. YOLA significa Orquesta Juvenil de Los \u00c1ngeles. Es un programa de m\u00fasica extremadamente competitivo en todo Estados Unidos. La Sra. Angie [Fundadora y Directora Ejecutiva de INTEMPO] y el Sr. Benn, mi instructor de viola, me animaron a hacer una audici\u00f3n para el festival de verano del 2022. Me emocion\u00f3 mucho la oportunidad de viajar y tocar m\u00fasica. He sido parte de esto durante dos veranos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 se requiri\u00f3 de ti?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fue muy dif\u00edcil: muchas horas practicando para una interpretaci\u00f3n de dos escalas [un conjunto de notas musicales bien ejecutadas] y dos extractos, que es un peque\u00f1o pasaje de una pieza, para entrar en el programa de verano de 10 d\u00edas. Despu\u00e9s de eso, es s\u00f3lo cuesti\u00f3n de grabar y enviar, pero se necesita algo m\u00e1s que presionar enviar; se necesita paciencia, determinaci\u00f3n, cooperaci\u00f3n y perseverancia. Me requer\u00eda amar lo que hago, amar mi instrumento, usar las herramientas que mis maestros me inculcaron y, en \u00faltima instancia, creer en m\u00ed misma para hacer lo mejor que pueda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo fue tu experiencia? \u00bfC\u00f3mo fue tu primera vez tocando con la orquesta?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Despu\u00e9s de recibir la buena noticia de ser aceptada para ir a Los \u00c1ngeles, me sent\u00ed muy orgullosa de m\u00ed misma. La primera vez que llegu\u00e9, reconoc\u00ed a dos chicas de INTEMPO y me alegr\u00e9 de compartir un dormitorio con caras conocidas. Nos hicimos muy cercanas en tan poco tiempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El famoso director Gustavo Dudamel pronunci\u00f3 un discurso inspirador y tuvo el honor de tocar con nuestra orquesta. Puede sonar muy vergonzoso, pero fue incre\u00edble. Es un sentimiento inexpresable, fuerte, intenso y excitante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La viola siempre est\u00e1 en el fondo de mi mente. Fue en todo lo que pude pensar despu\u00e9s. Fue poderoso estar en el gran escenario, en el Walt Disney Concert Hall. Simplemente m\u00e1gico. Me encanta la gran sensaci\u00f3n de tocar con gente nueva. S\u00e9 que solo estuve con ellos 10 d\u00edas, pero sent\u00ed que los conoc\u00eda por m\u00e1s tiempo. Podr\u00eda practicar horas al d\u00eda con mi orquesta, con mi secci\u00f3n, y no nos cansamos, a diferencia de cuando estoy sola, me aburro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 tipo de desaf\u00edos enfrentaste? \u00bfQu\u00e9 aprendiste?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El mayor desaf\u00edo para m\u00ed fue callar las voces de inseguridad y duda y saber que desaparecer\u00edan una vez que comenzara a tocar. Aprend\u00ed mucho de mis profesores, consejos que encienden un foco en mi cabeza y me acercan a la conquista de mi instrumento. Por ejemplo, para las notas que requieren movimientos r\u00e1pidos del arco, mi profesor me mostr\u00f3 herramientas como usar y practicar digitaciones m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidas [una t\u00e9cnica utilizada al tocar instrumentos musicales para indicar qu\u00e9 dedos se deben usar en un momento determinado]. Fue f\u00e1cil aprender con toda la atenci\u00f3n que me dieron mis profesores y compa\u00f1eros. Era como si todos estuvi\u00e9ramos presentes. Todo all\u00ed.
