EXTRA! EXTRAORDINARY LITERACY SUCCESS STORY<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nicole is a 9-year-old student at Nichols Elementary School in Stratford. She started playing violin with INTEMPO when she was just 6 years old and looks up to her older sisters, Jasmine and Kimberly, who play viola and violin respectively. Nicole participated in our literacy intervention program and has made significant progress in her reading abilities and academics. We are proud of her accomplishments! In Fall 2023, Nicole shared with us the exciting news that she had been accepted into REACH Prep, a nonprofit educational organization for high-achieving students. What is REACH Prep? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a special program that helps you get into great schools to enrich education. They test for academic excellence by starting off with 300 fourth graders and narrowing it down to 25 fourth graders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How did you prepare to apply for REACH Prep? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My parents discovered the program and told me I should challenge myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Did you have to do an interview?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I had to interview one person through Google Meets by myself. They asked me about me, not just what’s on paper but who I really am, what\u2019s my family like, and things that I take interest in for extracurriculars like music and my violin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where is REACH prep located? Do you have to travel far for this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n They participate in different schools, every Saturday I go to Greenwich and yeah, the car ride is usually an hour or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is your car ride like, when coming to INTEMPO from Stratford every week? What is it about INTEMPO that keeps you and your sisters coming here every week?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We keep coming because we enjoy being here. Just playing, collaborating, and learning about music makes the trip worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When did you realize you were in it to win it?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At first, I didn\u2019t know, but my parents kept me going. On top of being the youngest out of my sisters, there is enough pressure because my sisters are so talented and smart, so I pinch myself for not getting something right that they got on their first try. After that, I know I am able to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is your favorite book or topic to read now?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n I like to read historical fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The BEST PART was\u2026<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Getting to experience other people\u2019s lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is a quote you live by?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPlay the violin with love or not at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Is it hard?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s just 1+1. Adem\u00e1s de ser la m\u00e1s joven de mis hermanas, hay suficiente presi\u00f3n porque mis hermanas son muy talentosas e inteligentes, as\u00ed que me pellizco por no haber hecho bien algo que ellas hicieron en el primer intento.
