As a Psychology and Science in Society major, I
was constantly challenged to think critically about the intersections of science,
medicine, and society. This program was especially impactful as it deepened my
understanding of health disparities and medical mistrust, issues I’m passionate about
addressing in my future career.

Beyond the classroom, my college experience was defined by the relationships I built
and the communities I became a part of. As a WesMASS Scholar and a Hispanic
Scholarship Fund Scholar, I gained a network of peers and mentors who were a
constant source of support and encouragement. I also served as the 2024 Class
Liaison for the Latin American Student Organization and joined the Wesleyan Latin &
Ballroom Performance Team—roles that helped me step out of my comfort zone and
embrace leadership opportunities.

Tutoring children in the Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS) After School
Program (IAS) was another significant aspect of my time at Wesleyan. It was profoundly
rewarding to me to witness the children’s progress and see their confidence grow. The
experience brought home to me the importance of educational support and deepened
my appreciation for the resilience of immigrant and refugee communities. It reinforced
my commitment to community service.

What was your biggest accomplishment during college?
One of my proudest accomplishments during college was being an active and engaged
member of Wesleyan’s vibrant community. Balancing my time between academics,
work, and extracurricular activities was challenging, but it taught me the value of
effective time management and staying connected. My senior year was particularly fulfilling as I juggled three jobs, a remote internship, and various volunteer activities, all
while maintaining my academic performance and applying to graduate school.

I’m also proud that I played a part in creating spaces at Wesleyan where
underrepresented cultures could thrive and be celebrated. I’m grateful that I had the
opportunity to contribute to the Latin & Ballroom Performance Team’s first showcase
and see the team grow from a small group of dedicated dancers to a full-fledged
ensemble of 32 members. I was also involved in reestablishing the Latin American
Student Organization at Wesleyan, which had been inactive since the pandemic. I’m
grateful for the opportunity to have been part of these efforts and for the community that
supported and inspired me along the way.

What was it like living away from home?
The independence that came with living away from home was exciting, but it also
presented its own set of challenges. I had to learn quickly how to manage my time,
budget, and well-being. While I missed the familiarity of home, I learned to trust in my
abilities and seek out the resources and support available to me. This not only helped
me navigate college, but it also prepared me for the complexities of the professional
world. I learned that it’s okay to ask for help.

What advice do you have for current high school students thinking about
going to college?
For high school students thinking about going to college, my advice would be to
embrace uncertainty and be open to exploration. College is a time to discover your
interests, even if they take you in unexpected directions. Don’t be afraid to step out of
your comfort zone, try new things, and find what truly resonates with you. Also,
remember to balance academics with self-care. College can be demanding, but it’s
crucial to take care of your mental and physical health. Surround yourself with a
supportive community and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

e intelectualmente estimulante.
