Advice for High School Students Thinking About Going to College by Whitney B. Fabre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hear from Whitney B. Fabre, INTEMPO violin alumna and current Board of Directors member. She attended Westhill High School and will graduate from the University of North Carolina School of Fine Arts this May 2023. Whitney was a recipient of the Terry Hess Memorial Scholarship Award and the New Canaan Community Foundation\u2019s Sapienza Scholarship Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was it like to return to INTEMPO after you graduated in 2016?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was very impressed to return to INTEMPO and see the organization\u2019s growth and how it has improved. There are more teens interested in art and music and it made me very excited to talk to them. Chatting with the teens also made me relive a lot of the feelings and uncertainties I had when I was their age. I was very pleased to spend some time with them and answer some of their questions and uncertainties about their next life stage of going to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your college experience like and what advice do you have for current high school students?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The college experience is different for everyone and there are many resources and people available to help students navigate this experience. I encourage them to never be afraid to express how they feel and always ask all the necessary questions to people in the financial aid offices and to their professors because they are there to help them grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was it like for you when you were 16 years old?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, I was inexperienced and I was very afraid of big changes, but now that I’m graduating college this Spring, I feel confident in myself and I know that I have the fundamentals to start my professional life in the world of fashion and entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you feel about going to school in another state (North Carolina)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many teenagers are excited about going far from home to get away from their parents and to have freedom. That was also my mentality, but as time passes we realize that as students we need our family\u2019s support, both financially and emotionally. As I told the Teen Council, it all depends on what they want to achieve in their career and their professional life. Going to an out-of-state college could be the best decision if that college is what they are looking for and\/or offers the career they want to study. Moving away to college has its positives because you learn to be independent and you have to take care of yourself completely. I recommend students to really consider their situation and make decisions based on what they want to achieve with their professional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recommend young people to follow their vision and express what they think; mistakes are to be learned from and it\u2019s important that they have fun with each stage of their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asisti\u00f3 a la Westhill High School y est\u00e1 pr\u00f3xima a graduarse de la Universidad de Bellas Artes de Carolina del Norte este mayo 2023. \u00bfC\u00f3mo fue volver a INTEMPO despu\u00e9s de que te graduaste en el 2016?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me impresion\u00f3 mucho volver a INTEMPO y ver el crecimiento de la organizaci\u00f3n y ver c\u00f3mo la organizaci\u00f3n ha mejorado. Hay m\u00e1s adolescentes interesados en el arte y la m\u00fasica y me dio mucha ilusi\u00f3n hablar con ellos. Platicar con los j\u00f3venes tambi\u00e9n me hizo revivir muchas de mis incertidumbres de cuando era de la edad de ellos. Me dio mucho gusto compartir un tiempo con ellos y responder algunas de sus preguntas y sus incertidumbres de su futura etapa en la universidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo es tu experiencia en la universidad y qu\u00e9 consejo tienes para estudiantes de la secundaria?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cada experiencia universitaria es diferente para cada persona pero hay gente y recursos disponibles para ayudar a que el estudiante navegue esta experiencia. Yo les animo a que nunca tengan miedo de expresar lo que sienten y siembre hagan todas las preguntas que sean necesarias a las personas en las oficinas financieras y a sus profesores por que ellos est\u00e1n ah\u00ed para ayudar a su crecimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo fue para ti cuando ten\u00edas 16 a\u00f1os?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En el 2016, yo era inexperta y ten\u00eda mucho miedo a los grandes cambios pero ahora que me voy a graduar de la universidad esta primavera me siento segura en m\u00ed y s\u00e9 que tengo una base fundamental para empezar mi vida profesional en el mundo del entretenimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo te sientes de ir a la universidad en otro estado (Carolina del Norte)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A muchos j\u00f3venes les ilusiona irse fuera de su casa para alejarse de sus padres y tener libertad. Esa tambi\u00e9n era mi mentalidad pero al pasar el tiempo nos damos cuenta que como estudiantes necesitamos el soporte de la familia tanto econ\u00f3mico como emocional. Como les dije al Teen Council, todo depende de lo que quieran lograr en su carrera y en su vida profesional. Mudarse a una universidad en otro estado pudiera ser la mejor decisi\u00f3n si esa universidad es lo que est\u00e1n buscando u ofrece la carrera que desean estudiar. Irse fuera de casa tiene sus ventajas porque se aprende a ser independiente y tienes que hacerte cargo de ti por completo. Recomiendo a los estudiantes que consideren su situaci\u00f3n y hagan decisiones basadas en lo que quieren lograr con su vida profesional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A los j\u00f3venes les recomiendo que sigan su visi\u00f3n, que expresen lo que piensan, que los errores son para aprender y que se diviertan con cada etapa de su vida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
